Pla i Llevant is Mallorca's most important wine region

The area was recognized as a wine region in 1993 and the D.O. Pla i Llevant - Mallorca was created in 1999.

Location and climate

Located in the central plain and eastern Mallorca (Majorca), covers 18 municipalities: Felanitx, Porreras and Manacor are the most importants, Algaida, Ariany, Artà, Campos, Capdepera, Llucmajor, María de la Salut, Montuiri, Muro, Petra, Sant Joan, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Santa Margalida, Sineu and Vilafranca de Bonany.

The climate is Mediterranean with mild temperatures, slightly cooler winters, and hot and dry summers. The soil consists of limestone, calcareouss soil and clay.

Grapes used

The grape varieties of the wine appellation Pla i Llevant - Mallorca are:

Red grapes

Callet (majority), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo (ull de Llebre), Manto Negro, Syrah, Fogoneu, Monastrell and Pinot Noir.

White grapes

Chardonnay, Prensal Blanc, Macabeo, Moscatel, Perellada and Riesling.

General characteristics of the wines

Red Wines: the color of wine is characterized by the variety of grapes used. In the mouth the tannins are soft, with balanced acidity.
White wines: the characteristics of the wines are specific to the variety of grape used. The wines made from Chardonnay grapes have marked aromas of tropical fruits, dairy and vanilla. Wines made from Premsal blanc, Macabeo and Parellada have acidic fruit aromas.
